Anton Kusters researched for six years and photographed a piece of blue sky over every single site of a former concentration or extermination camp of the German Nazi regime in Europe. The 1,078 camps existed for 4,432 days, from 1933 to 1945, as part of a highly organized system of captivity, forced labor, and murder. There are no visible remains of more than half. Each Polaroid is hand-stamped with the number of victims under that piece of sky as well as with the GPS coordinates.
For The Blue Skies Project , the Belgian artist Anton Kusters (* 1974) was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2019 and was a finalist in the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2020. The Blue Skies Project was curated by Monica Allende and the exhibition is accompanied by a 13-year audio piece by sound artist Ruben Samama.
