Despite being the second religion by number of believers in Italy with 1.5 million adepts, Islam has not yet been recognised by the State as an official faith.
This fact alone, together with the exploitation of the Islamic case by far-right parties and populist trends, ostracises Islamic communities to the fringes of Italian society. This results in the presence of few mosques in the country, none of which is to be found in the North-East.
Hidden Islam acts as a cadastral catalogue for approximately 100 building types – from warehouses to basements, shops and garages – employed by the Islamic communities living in North-Eastern Italy as places of prayer.
