The inaugural issue of Chinese magazine Altertrue.
Each issue, the editors Lin Shu, Zhu Mo and Liu Yuan invite a contributing editor to explore one specific theme. For the first publication, Zhang Zhizhou was asked to help curate photography regarding “Wilderness”.
As the editors explain, “Wilderness” photography has been a trend in mainland Chinese photography for the better part of a decade, with a strong period in the years 2007-2010. For Altertrue magazine, seven contemporary Chinese photographers were asked for their interpretation of the genre. With few limitations, the photographers explore “Wilderness” in their own terms, in photographic styles ranging from portraiture to city and landscape photography.
Altertrue magazine was founded to provide “Straight Photography” as an alternative to current mainland Chinese photography, judged by Altertrue’s editors as too perfected and clean to elicit a true response from its audience.
