Hidden Umbria is more of a philosophical guide than a tourist handbook, urging mindfulness over consumption, patience over purchases. From the church in the tree to the painted house, the imaginary republic to the rock bar, and mummified bodies to utopian architecture, the twelve articles we’ve brought together here create a rough yet authentic sketch of a region where even the borders are uncertain. Some wear this homeland of ours like a reassuring – if somewhat tattered – overcoat, while others flaunt it like the finest of fashionable evening wear, yet Umbria is always the same and always itself: a refuge, a blessing, a cradle like no other for broken hopes and dreams still hanging on by a thread. It is one of the most elusive regions of Italy for inhabitants as well as visitors, so much so that the title Hidden Umbria might as well simply say Umbria.
