Pelle di Lava

Chiara Indelicato, photographer and resident of Stromboli, explores in her work life on a volcanic island, where inhabitants live with the acute awareness of a finite world, at the mercy of the elements. Beneath the ash, between the sea and fire, she questions how to subsist in an environment with limited resources.

Pelle di Lava originates from two disasters that struck in 2022: a fire that ravaged the island's vegetation, followed by torrential rains that triggered mudslides reaching the village.

Through this project, Chiara Indelicato offers a reflection on the climate emergency, advocating for an animistic relationship with nature and the right to defend this living, fragile land, with the volcano itself becoming its spokesperson. Developing her images using coffee, vitamin C, and seawater—without polluting substances—she creates an organic connection between her process and the island, raw and untamed.
